Saving Local Schools with Homeschoolers and a Self-Directed Education option
I am running for Trustee because I discovered that there are no fewer than three elementary schools in Ward 8 that have been targeted for closure. In fact, Rosscarrock Elementary is closing this September. Oddly, according to the City of Calgary projected population data, Rosscarrock is set to double by 2024! The original data is from: calgary.ca/csps/cns/research-and-strategy/community-profiles/community-profiles.html. It saddens me that this vital part of a community will be lost. I sincerely believe there are other options and would welcome the opportunity to explore those options with the people in Ward 8. Let’s get creative! For example, the schools with low enrolment can be used serve homeschoolers better. There are many options to that end but my experience suggests that learning and social interaction is optimized in a hybrid model where the board provides a physical space for homeschoolers who can opt-in and opt-out of classes and programs. Supporting homeschoolers to participate in school as Free Learners and providing this option to families interested in Self-Directed Education will increase enrolment and help to keep local schools open.
Let’s not close schools in growing neighbourhoods, let’s be creative and find ways to keep them open and available as vibrant community hubs.
